Record number of sackings in first half of season

A record breaking 29 managers were sacked from within England’s top four divisions during the first half of this season.

Since August six Premier League managers, 10 Championship managers, six League One managers and seven League Two managers have had their contracts terminated.

This means that as things stand the current record of 53 sackings which occurred in the 2001-02 season is on course to be broken.

LMA Chief Executive Richard Bevan said,  “We must continue to shine a light on this issue.

“With the hire-and-fire culture engrained within football, it’s so difficult to survive for any meaningful length of time in order to learn your trade, learn from mistakes and experiences. Managers must cope with instant judgements and, often, success and failure are rarely that far apart.

“Professional football is the ultimate results-driven business, with owners, boards and supporters’ expectation levels going up and up year on year

“Boards need to take a step back and look at their league position compared to resources, squad, stadium capacity, attendances, and compare themselves with other similar clubs.”

The increasing “hire and fire culture” has led to the average tenure of managerial reigns across all four divisions drop dramatically.

Average tenure of current managers by years

Premier League – 2.13

Championship – 1.37

League One – 1.17

League Two – 1.63

In addition to this, only six managers have been at the same job for the last six years. (Arsene Wenger (Arsenal) , Paul Tisdale (Exeter), Karl Robinson (MK Dons), Jim Bentley (Morecambe), Phil Parkinson (Bradford) and Steve Davis (Crewe).
