Michael O’Neill signs new contract with Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill has put pen to paper on a new four year contract.

The 46-year-old guided Northern Ireland to their first major tournament in 30 years when they topped their Euro 2016 qualifying group.

O’Neill was appointed as Northern Ireland manager back in December 2011 after successful spells in charge of Brechin City and Shamrock Rovers.

His performance as manager was rewarded when he was named Coach of the Year at the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year awards in December.

The new deal will come into effect after this year’s European Championships and is said to be worth around £500,000 a year. It will therefore make O’Neill the highest ever paid Northern Ireland manager.

Northern Ireland kick off their Euro 201 campaign against Poland in Nice on June 12th. O’Neill’s men will then go on to play Ukraine and Germany.
