NOVEMBER 21 will mark the tenth anniversary of the death of Rene Vignal, France’s most extraordinary goalkeeper.
Vignal’s life was the stuff of novels, and then some. Up to the 1960s, he was known as “le gardien volant” (the flying goalkeeper), a feline keeper who had been an icon in the 1950s. From 1970 onwards and his time in jail, he would be nicknamed “le gardien voleur” (the thieving goalkeeper), a pun that encapsulated his post-career trajectory.
