In January 1979, West Bromwich Albion paid a British transfer record of £500,000 to bring David Mills from Middlesbrough.
Just a few weeks later, the record fee doubled to the mind-blowing sum of one million pounds. Remember, at the time the average house was just £23,000 and a pint of beer was around 50p.
