Editor John Lyons reflects on Late Tackle reaching its landmark 100th edition
As newspapers and magazines continue to feel the squeeze, it’s no mean feat to hit a century of editions.
There are plenty of publications that have bitten the dust since Late Tackle first hit the newsstands in the latter part of 2011.
Back then the idea was to give fans a voice – they could get their opinions, their views into a national publication. That is still largely the case today as a variety of contributors from up and down the land – and at times from overseas – send us in their contributions.
Without them, the magazine simply wouldn’t exist, so hats off to everyone who has been in touch over the years. Congratulations to those who saw their words end up in print (and apologies to those who didn’t get the nod).
Naturally, the quality of writing will vary from individual to individual, but there is one thing they all share in common – a love of football.
That’s seen in the wide variety of articles we receive at Late Tackle HQ. It may be someone writing about their favourite player, the financial woes of the club they support, a match they went to or a visit overseas.
That’s one of the beauties of Late Tackle. We never know what we are going to get, meaning that no two editions will ever be remotely the same.
In addition, we are fortunate to be provided articles that cover a large timeframe – from modern day to more than a century ago. The only difficulty with the more ancient ones is finding pictures to go with them!
Thanks go to our design team who do their very best to make sure that every article looks as good as it possibly can.
Just take a look at the front covers accompanying these words and you will see a wide variety of clubs, players and issues covered. Plenty has happened over the last 14 years and, fingers crossed, Late Tackle can continue to document the game’s good, bad and ugly.
A final thanks go to you, our readers. Without your support and willingness to shell out for the magazine, we wouldn’t still be in business.
From a personal point of view, it’s been a pleasure (well, most of the time!) to be involved in Late Tackle for more than a decade – and counting.
As it says on the front cover, we’d like to think it’s still ‘the football mag with a bit of a kick!’
