There were some gasps of amazement at the price Liverpool were willing to pay to capture Florian Wirtz this summer.
The Reds paid £100m – with another £16m in potential add-ons - to prise the highly-rated German international from Bayer Leverkusen.
To be fair, the 22-year-old had arguably been the outstanding performer in the Bundesliga over the past two seasons.
He was voted as such at the end-of-season awards and there were a plethora of top clubs courting his signature.
