The fortunes of French football had waxed and waned since the 1950s, and in 1975, they were at a low ebb.
The national team had largely been treading water since the swashbuckling odyssey of the 1958 World Cup (humbled in the semi-final by a formidable Brazil), and the last time a club had consistently shone in Europe was Stade de Reims nearly two decades earlier.
