I RECENTLY spent some time in a coastal town, winning a comestible prize from an arcade’s 2p machine for the first time. It occurred to me that the act of expending spare change in the hope of causing coins and/or sweets to fall onto the collection tray is comparable to the gamble of an EFL club dismissing their manager mid-season: if it succeeds, those falling coins symbolise much-needed points, as a winning patina is cast over a hitherto lacklustre campaign.
