Lionel Messi thrives on expectation and pressure. Having chosen to end his glittering club career in the MLS, the ageing maestro went into this summer’s World Cup with all eyes gazing.

The poster boy of ‘soccer’ in America and main attraction of David Beckham’s Inter Miami franchise, Messi couldn’t afford to flop at his sixth and, surely, final World Cup.
After all, he will be turning 43 by the time the next one rolls around in 2030.
