ON A warm Californian spring afternoon I found myself outside a big, stark concrete bowl called the Coliseum.
There was the smell of barbecue wafting across the expansive car lot as families ate and drank by their cars. I could hear a live band and there were some tents selling souvenirs or hot Mexican food.
