THE MAGIC OF PANINI: Bob Pateman reflects on the impact of a World Cup staple that is coming towards the end of its journey

More than 60 years ago, the Panini family from Modena operated one of the small kiosks that once thrived in Italy, a place to buy newspapers, magazines, postcards and cigarettes.

It was managed by Olga Panini, who ran it with help from two of her sons, Benito and Giuseppe.
The boys were entrepreneurs, and they expanded to form a small business of their own, distributing newspapers around the town.
When, in 1960, Giuseppe was offered a large number of leftover cards showing Italian soccer players, he bought them all.
