English clubs have experienced many enjoyable seasons in Europe, but 1995-96 wasn’t one of them.

Blackburn Rovers failed to get out of their Champions League group in a campaign remembered more for David Batty and Graeme Le Saux fighting each other during a 3-0 defeat to Spartak Moscow than it was for Mike Newell’s nine-minute hat-trick against Rosenborg.
Elsewhere, Everton were eliminated by Feyenoord in the second round of the Cup Winners’ Cup, falling short of the triumphant standards that had been recently set by Manchester United (1991) and Arsenal (1994) in the same competition.
