Porto sack Lopetegui…despite losing just one league game

For all those who argue that managers are given a rough deal in modern football, we have a new lead argument for you.

Julen Lopetegui’s Porto fell to their first league defeat of the season last weekend when they were beaten 2-0 by league leaders Sporting Lisbon.

This was then followed by a 1-1 draw against Rio Ave, which left the side without a win in three games.

Unfortunately for Lopetegui this run was deemed unacceptable by the Porto board who relieved him of his duties today.

Lopetegui took the Porto job in May 2014 and guided them to the Champions League Quarter finals and a second placed finish last season.

He leaves the club in 3rd place in the Primeira Liga and in the knockout stages of the Europa League where they face Borussia Dortmund in February.
