atleticomadridAtletico Madrid’s hopes of winning a second La Liga title in three years were given a boost as they moved to the top of the table with a 2-0 win at Celta Vigo.

Antoine Griezmann hit his 10th goal of the season before Yannick Carrasco confirmed the victory 10 minutes from time as Diego Simeone’s side moved two points clear of second placed Barcelona.

“We knew it would be a tough game as Celta play the ball around well,” Griezmann told Spanish television. “But we were strong at the back and we know that when we have chances up front we can score at any moment.

Atletico Madrid won their first La Liga title for 18 years in 2014 but fell off the pace last season and finished 16 points behind eventual winners Barcelona.

Simeone’s side have won particular plaudits for their solid defensive displays this season and have only conceded eight goals in 19 games.

There was pressure on Atletico yesterday after both Barcalona and Real Madrid won by huge margins on Saturday.
