Seria C club Alessandria reach Italian Cup quarter finals

italyAlessandria beat Seria A side Genoa earlier this week to become the first third-tier club to reach the Italian Cup quarter-finals in more than 30 years

The side from Piedmont have shocked everyone this season with their dramatic progression through the competition and grabbed an extra time winner in Genoa courtesy of  striker Riccardo Bocalon.

It is the furthest Alessandria have been in the competition since losing the 1936 final.

After the victory against Genoa, midfielder Manuel Marras told reporters, “With grit, sacrifice, and team spirit you can play anyone anywhere. The coach (Angelo Gregucci) is instilling in us a winning mentality, he has united the group, and we owe a great part of this to him.”

In addition to their cup heroics, Alessandria have also been in emphatic form in the league and currently sit top of Lega Pro.

They are due to face Serie B side Spezia in the quarter final.
